Some of you probably know, and some of you don’t, that I don’t have a great love for science fiction. But recently, I got to hear John Otte speak at the One Year Adventure Novel conference and he talked about his book, Numb.
And I was intrigued.
So I bought it.
And had him sign it.
And then I devoured it.
I read this book in two days, partly because I was sick, but I just couldn’t put this book down, IT IS SO GOOD!
Save the girl…or his soul?
Crusader is numb. He feels neither emotion nor pain, a divine gift that allows him to be the Ministrix’s best assassin. Whether it’s heretics from within or heathen from without, Crusader is the sword in the True Church’s hand. And if he remains obedient to his superiors, he will be able to let go of his guilt.
But then he’s ordered to kill Isolda Westin. It shouldn’t be a problem. A target is a target. When Crusader sees Isolda’s image, though, something strange happens. He experiences a moment of panic, a wave of emotions, the first he’s felt in as long as he can remember.
In that moment, he realizes he can’t fulfill his mission. He can’t kill Isolda Westin, even if it means he’ll be condemned as an enemy of the Ministrix.
Soon Crusader and Isolda are on the run. Will they be able to learn why the Ministrix wants Isolda dead? Or will they both face the harsh justice of the “True Church”?
First of all, I adore this cover. It’s gorgeous.
Second of all, this book gives you the feels, so brace yourselves.
Plot/Story line: 5/5 A twisting plot that is intense, gripping, and full of surprises. I may or may not have gasped and cringed several times as the plot twisted where I did not expect it to.
Characters: 5/5 The characters that John Otte has created are complex and believable. You feel with them, learn with them, and hurt with them. Hence the feels.
Writing/Dialogue 5/5 The writing is fresh, strong, and gripping. Hence why I couldn’t put the book down, and why I am still suffering from feels. I’m going to start a petition for a book two. Crusader needs a book two.
Want to read/ability: 5/5- John Otte knows how to build a universe without getting bogged down in the details, so everything is easy to understand.
Bad Language: None
Inappropriate Content: None
Over-all-rating: 5/5- This book makes it to my favorite books’ shelf. I adore it. I love it. I want this book to made into a movie. And this book has me hooked on science-fiction, but nothing else can be as good as John Otte’s Numb.

Oh, and technically, The Hive is a kind of sequel to this one. Same story universe and it follows chronologically after the events of Numb. And if you pay attention… well, I’ll leave it at that. 🙂
